Fall News

International leaders from 200 countries are gathering in Glasgow at the end of October to attend the UN’s climate summit, COP26. We’re heard it said many times before – but COP26 really is the world’s last best chance to commit to the drastic emissions reductions needed by 2030 if we’re going to be able to stave off the most catastrophic climate consequences. We are watching to see what commitments world leaders make. What will they promise and what will have teeth? Key demands: rapid phase outs of fossil fuels, investments by rich nations in international climate justice, and steps to build a global just transition that decarbonizes our economies, creates good green jobs, and advances racial, gender, and economic equity within and among nations. See our recent blog for more information and actions related to the Glasgow climate summit.

Looking globally deepens our commitment to acting at every level of influence – advocating for transformative global and national commitments, while advancing climate equity policies at the state and local level. With this in mind, we are pleased to add to the Climate Equity Policy Center’s portfolio our new resource featuring key steps that local governments can take to support food justice and climate equity – see below for details!

New resources: Food justice, food security and climate equity

Our new factsheet on food justice and climate equity explores the intersection between food insecurity and environmental injustices. It shows how local governments can enact policies and programs that address food injustice, food insecurity, environmental injustice, and climate change. By supporting community-led efforts focused on access to culturally desired foods, while creating policies that ensure food suppliers divert foods from landfills, governments can remove obstacles to community connection, health, and wellbeing.
